Correction: P2006 and Certification

A while back I pointed out that, according to this article, Prophecy 2006 was the only CCXML 1.0 interpreter that fully met the CCXML 1.0 specification.

Since that time, I've received email — from high up the food chain — that the topic deserves a more balanced approach:

  • Fifteen companies are certified as CCXML compliant.
  • Voxeo is the only company that complies with all the optional compliance items.
  • "Optional" means just that: optional.

In other words, if your application doesn't need ABNF grammars, then in fact you won't care if an interpreter supports those optional ABNF grammars.

This doesn't take anything away from Voxeo; they've done well to meet all the criteria, and certainly I'm enthusiastic about the results. But my correspondent reminded me that as a consultant and developer, I have to be goal oriented: does the product help me achieve my goal? If so, then the product qualifies for consideration, and a missing optional piece may very well be irrelevant.

CCXML Certification

Actually, 15 companies are VoiceXML certified. CCXML certification hasn't started yet, but should start in the next year or so.

Btw, all call transfer functionality in Voicexml certification is "optional". Optional most certainly isn't close to irrelevant when it comes to the VoiceXML specification.
